Keeping up with O3b mPOWER
SES’s third and fourth O3b mPOWER satellites were successfully launched into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, United States, at 6:12 pm local time on 28 April 2023.

About O3b mPOWER
SES's O3b mPOWER communications system comprises an initial constellation of 11 high-throughput and low-latency satellites as well as extensive ground infrastructure. With the first two satellites launched in 2022, the global terabit-level scale constellation will be located in the medium earth orbit (MEO), 8,000km away from earth, and will start its service in Q3 2023.
Features
Proven Impact
O3b mPOWER is SES’s second-generation MEO constellation. It is built on the proven track record of SES’s current O3b constellation of 20 MEO satellites. The O3b system has been delivering high-performance communications services since 2014 to customers operating in nearly 50 countries today.
Our Customers
The O3b mPOWER system is capable of delivering reliable connectivity services with guaranteed high-throughput, ranging from 50Mbps to multiple gigabits per second to mobile network operators, cruises, energy companies, as well as governments and institutions across the world.
Technology Ecosystem
We work with various technology partners ranging from satellite manufacturer and launcher to software companies and modem partners to from an ecosystem designed to deliver unprecedented performance.
As the journey of O3b mPOWER unfolds, a crucial part of its development lies in the communications system’s cutting-edge technology. Whether it’s the satellites, ground infrastructure or new digital software, SES’s mission, together with our technology partners, is to leverage innovations in software-driven automation and network control so that satellite-based networks can be integrated seamlessly into existing networks. Find out more about how the O3b mPOWER technology is being developed.

Space Segment
Our industry-leading space sector partners are essential to our success. Together, we’re building and launching 11 fully digitised O3b mPOWER satellites.
Boeing
Our longstanding satellite manufacturing partner whom we’ve collaboratively designed the O3b mPOWER spacecraft.
SpaceX
Our satellite launch partner that will be launching our satellites onboard Falcon 9 rockets.
Ground Infrastructure
Our ground infrastructure partners enable us to offer our customers terminal solutions that fit a variety of applications.
Whether its TT&C gateway partner (Comtech and CPI), modem platform partners (Gilat and ST Engineering iDIRECT) or customer terminal partners (Intellian, ALL.SPACE, Orbit, Viasat, AVL, Getsat,), we are co-developing a diverse and simplified line-up that will bring a new wave of standardisation and interoperability across the ground segment and ultimately benefit our customers in the enterprise, government and mobility industries.

SES has partnered with teleport providers in different regions to host as many as eight O3b mPOWER ground stations across the world (some co-located with Microsoft’s Azure data centres). Depending on our customers’ needs, more gateways can also be built.
Software
Together with partners such as Kythera, Amdocs, Amartus and Amphinicy Technologies, we are developing a cutting-edge software that spans across O3b mPOWER’s infrastructure to unlock the system’s full potential and bring new levels of flexibility, automation and frequency allocation depending on our customer’s needs.
Thanks to its unprecedented flexibility and superior performance, O3b mPOWER is able to address the high-throughput and high-end connectivity demand from mobile network operators, cruises, naval vessels, governments, energy industry, enterprises worldwide to deliver connectivity to underserved places and bridge the digital divide.
