Shaping the Future of Connectivity
Satellite technology has evolved to push the boundaries of connectivity — with new solutions, such as high throughput satellites (HTS), creating new possibilities. SES’s unique capabilities aboard SES-12 will offer both wide-beam coverage and high-power multi-spot beams. Set to launch in the second half of 2017, SES-12 is a hybrid satellite providing flexible, efficient and cost-effective coverage to accommodate bandwidth requirements for VSAT, enterprise, and mobility applications.
A Unique Hybrid Design
SES-12 stands out due to its hybrid design. It combines the best of both traditional geostationary (GEO) wide beams and HTS payloads that can be tailored for different applications. Developed in close consultation with our Asian customers, we’ve designed the satellite to address the future requirements of their end customers.
Co-located with SES-8 at the prime video orbital slot at 95°E, SES-12’s wide-beam coverage enables access to more than 20 million direct-to-home (DTH) households in India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
In addition to using wide beams, broadcasters and DTH operators can leverage high-power Ku-band multi-spot beams to deliver language-specific ethnic TV content to audiences in targeted locations. This means you can deliver tailored content to specific locations more cost effectively.
For data applications, the same advantages apply. Connectivity delivered via the satellite’s wide-beam coverage will help bring broadband access to remote areas, bridging the digital divide and empowering rural communities with access to knowledge and information. The concentrated power of the spot beams is ideal for applications such as e-learning and e-government services, particularly for those delivered to specific cities or provinces.
Multi-spot beams are transforming the travel experience for air and sea passengers, with massive throughput that makes broadband connectivity more accessible for cruise liners, merchant ships, and airlines, ensuring customers across Asia can stay connected.
Driving innovation is what we do. Whether in space or from the ground up, our innovative technologies – including those on-board SES-12 – are helping to shape the future of connectivity.
