The Magnitude of Purpose
Zoom in from thousands of miles above Earth to continents, islands and cities.
Look closer to see the Arctic explorer fighting climate change, the neurologist preventing disease, and the journalist keeping native culture alive. Maybe you’ll spot the pilot completing a security mission or the professional wrestler supporting the next generation in the ring.
Our work begins in space but, through the partnerships with our customers, it ends with millions of individuals making a meaningful difference on the ground. By bringing content and connectivity solutions to every corner of the earth, we are helping them change the world.
This is our purpose.
Protecting Nations
Meet John Sullivan - Manned Airborne ISR Pilot
John didn't join the Royal Air Force to make his fortune; over 33 years as a fighter pilot, job satisfaction came from leaving society a better place.
He has brought this ethos to his civilian life, running Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) services that help governments and security services protect borders and freedoms.
John works with a team of pilots, engineers, technologists, systems specialists and operations personnel who carry out missions, from border surveillance to geographical surveys.
Data from flight sensors gives his customers the ability to make high-quality decisions to save and protect lives.
As head of operations at DEA Aviation Ltd, John and the team partnered with SES. During an ISR mission, every second counts, and our multi-orbit satellite fleet delivers data in near real-time for decision-making that keeps nations safe.
Helping DEA Aviation and John achieve their purpose.
Transforming the health of Ethiopia
Meet Dr. Mellon Bekele - Neurologist and Content Creator
A mother in a small village 400 miles from Addis Ababa tunes into the Hali Show to learn about childhood nutrition.
Access to this life-changing information is thanks to Dr Mellon Bekele, co-founder of AfriHealth, a media company that shares that health advice with tens of thousands of Ethiopians through a rolling 24-hour TV channel, radio station, and online channels.
Her motto: Prevention is better than cure.
AfriHealth’s work is only possible due to Ethiosat, the country’s first free-to-air television platform.
The joint effort between SES and the Association of Ethiopian Broadcasters has made local broadcasting financially viable and increased its reach to millions.
In a country with one of the lowest internet penetration rates in Africa, Afrihealth’s work means more Ethiopians can recognise the early signs of a stroke or the symptoms of diabetes, which is vital knowledge that can transform health outcomes.
Find out how SES and Ethiosat are helping Dr Mellon achieve her purpose.
Inspiring the next generation to save this planet
Meet Robert Swan - Arctic Explorer and Activist
A live stream from an Antarctic research ship inspires a classroom of UK school children to study science.
They lean in as the dedicated explorer and environmentalist Robert Swan OBE describes the expedition’s mission to raise awareness of climate change and the preservation of Antarctica.
Amid tundra and ice, satellite connection is vital for survival and the operation of powerful research technology.
SES supported Robert’s 2022 ClimateForce (CFA22) expedition to Antarctica with dedicated connectivity for communication and data transfer.
CFA22 took 172 people from over 35 nations on a climate change and leadership expedition. The team members included people from the world’s top corporations, educational institutions and media outlets. Over the 12-day mission, they worked on climate solutions to share on their return.
Discover how SES and ClimateForce help Robert achieve his purpose.
Creating a shared experience through sport
Meet Pat Buck - Pro Wrestler and Trainer
As All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Dynamite counts down to air, fans are preparing to lose themselves in two hours of pure entertainment. Across the world, on televisions, smartphones and tablets, the theme music cranks up the adrenaline.
Professional wrestler Pat Buck is one of the many heroes and villains bringing ringside drama to living rooms one power throw at a time. His purpose is to create a thrilling shared experience in a sometimes inward-looking world.
As well as working for AEW, he mentors the sport’s up-and-coming stars, helping them perfect their personas and master the moves.
His dojo is so successful it has become an unofficial feeder school for AEW. “I want my students to be trained properly to have the right etiquette and skills. It’s my calling,” he says.
SES helps AEW deliver weekly live events across the US. A number of our SNG trucks join every match, broadcasting from all venues, even those that don’t have the luxury of fibre optic connectivity. Together, we bring the action to global fans, who can watch on any device at any time.

Celebrating ancient island culture
Meet Julie Taripo - Local Journalist
Dancers whirl around a shaded stage with high-energy grace and striking blue costumes. Local journalist Julie Taripo captures the moment on her phone and uploads it to her Moments IN TIME FaceBook page.
The post is just one of many documenting Cook Island life and traditions, from family gatherings to high-energy carnival drumming and a tour of a local coffee plantation.
Some of her 31,000 followers will be inspired to visit the stunning archipelago, but for locals, the post represents a reflection, celebration and continuation of their culture.
Our partnership with Vodafone Cook Islands gives Julie access to internet services that many journalists take for granted, such as uploading video from a mobile phone. More than this, it means small communities on the remotest island have access to news, healthcare and education.
Helping Julie achieve her purpose through our work with Vodafone Cook Islands.
