State-of-the-art satellite terminal will enable CNT to double speed of internet for the archipelago

Ecuador Minister of Telecommunications and Information Society Vianna Maino and CNT’s General Manager Lourdes Cuesta inaugurated yesterday at Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos, the first O3b mPOWER satellite terminal built for CNT, SES announced today.

The O3b mPOWER communications system is SES’s second-generation satellite constellation operating in medium earth orbit and is built on the success of its existing O3b constellation. With four O3b mPOWER satellites launched and two more to go, O3b mPOWER is scheduled to start providing services at the end of this year.

In the recently-announced agreement between CNT and SES, the company will increase its capacity to 2.5 gigabits to double the speed of the internet and establish a free Wi-Fi zone for users in the Galapagos Islands. CNT is already serving its residential, corporate and government customers with MEO connectivity on Santa Cruz Island, and will roll out 4G networks to the neighboring islands.
