Satellite Monitor in Africa: Research Methodology
Presented by Ricardo Topham
All interviews are conducted face-to-face and we work with agencies. A requirement to ensure project success is to organize briefing sessions on-site with the local interviewer teams. During these sessions, we introduce the interviewers to SES, the background of Satellite Monitor, its main goals and objectives, the data we expect to collect, etc., but, most importantly, we walk them through and review in detail the questionnaires. This part is critical since we must ensure that there are no loose ends in the surveys. As these are the people conducting the interviews and collecting the data, we also must be 100% certain that the interviewers understand the questions thoroughly.
The local research teams find it very important to have someone from SES on-site for two-three days and available to answer their questions, doubts, or to explain what SES is doing in Africa and across the world. They greatly appreciate that we listen to their feedback and that their input is used to adjust the questionnaires. When speaking with some of the local interviewers, they pointed out that hardly any company takes research in these markets as seriously as we do, and that is something that has an impact on the survey's outcome; having an engaged team can only bring benefits!

The Past and Present
YoY we have grown the market from 2014; 1.7m – 4.5m homes indicating a growth of over 200% increase and because of this we have a reach that can inform decision making such as new product and services called the VoD-E, it also allows for PayTV offering in the market. Satellite Monitor helps our customers judge the type of platform they are on, audience targeting, their marketing engagement.
SES connects people to watch their content on any device anywhere, so we transfer FTA to OTT platforms. Single channels are offered many more platforms to share experiences and tell their stories. The fact that we also want to help our broadcasters embrace new technologies like the cloud-based playout solutions and content management, archiving, distribution etc indicates the strides we take to continuously innovate as consumer habit shifts in this era of digital transformation.
