Ultra HD, a development beyond high definition

This week, the spotlight is on Ultra HD. With two major exhibitions taking place, SES took the opportunity to showcase the Ultra HD demo channels in the new high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard.

IFA 2013 which took place in Berlin earlier this week welcomed more than 120 trade visitors who joined experts from ASTRA, German TV Platform, Fraunhofer HHI, Harmonic, Sky Deutschland and Sony to discuss the future opportunities of Ultra HD technology.

Visitors could experience the excellent image quality of Ultra HD from still images to 60p sports content such as FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and Wimbledon 2013. The exhibition offered an insight into new product ideas and demonstrated the availability of technology required to broadcast Ultra HD.

Closely following IFA 2013, IBC 2013 will kick off this Friday in Amsterdam. Here, the SES stand will once again promote how the Ultra HD technology can deliver brighter, smoother and more colourful pictures and enhance the viewing experience with its two demo channels.

For one of the Ultra HD channels, SES partners with Sky Deutschland and Harmonic to deliver an exciting array of Ultra HD content consisting of sports matches, blockbuster movies and documentaries to the first actual Ultra HD consumer set top boxes.

The other Ultra HD channel is set up by SES and Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute to broadcast Ultra HD content in the new high efficiency video coding HEVC standard, but at higher frame rates.

“By showing these two demo channels at IBC 2013, SES has once again demonstrated how it collaborates with the industry to make Ultra HD a commercial reality..” said Thomas Wrede, Vice President of Reception Systems at SES.
